Consider the year 1968. St. Vartan Cathedral’s bells ring out. It is a proud moment for the Armenian Apostolic Church. This is their first cathedral in North America. Here, on the corner of Second Avenue and 34th Street, stands St. Vartan Cathedral.

St. Vartan Cathedral is more than just a building. It symbolizes the enduring faith of the Armenian people. Its design echoes the Saint Hripsime Church in Armenia. That church was built in the fourth century.

Walker O. Cain designed St. Vartan Cathedral. He worked with Édouard Utudjian. They blended modern techniques with ancient Armenian styles. The result is unique. It is a testament to Armenian heritage.

Look up. Notice the double-intersecting arches. These arches support a pyramidal dome. It rises 120 feet above the street. The dome is a focal point. It is adorned with Christian symbols. You can see Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Wheat and grapes represent the Eucharist. The Phoenix symbolizes resurrection.

Stained-glass windows illuminate the interior. They depict scenes from Christ’s life. Also scenes from the early days of Christianity in Armenia are shown. St. Vartan is depicted. He fought to defend the Armenian Church.

Outside, a plaza provides space for reflection. “Descent from the Cross” is a bronze sculpture here. Reuben Nakian created it. In 2015, “Migrations” was added. Michael Aram created it. It commemorates the Armenian Genocide.

Step inside St. Vartan Cathedral. Feel the spaciousness. Notice how the arches create an unobstructed view of the altar. The interior reflects Armenian tradition. Chandeliers are based on seventh-century designs.

The altar faces east. This is traditional for Christian churches. Crosses are displayed without the body of Christ. Armenians emphasize resurrection. They celebrate the glorified Lord.

The circle seal is dedicated to God and those who enter. It quotes Matthew 5:13. The dates 301 and 1968 are inscribed. They mark important moments in Armenian Christian history. The year 301 represents when Christianity became Armenia’s state religion. 1968 is when St. Vartan’s was consecrated.

St. Vartan Cathedral stands as a testament. It connects New York City to ancient Armenia. It embodies faith and resilience. It is a vibrant center for the Armenian community. It welcomes all who seek solace or cultural enrichment.
