Hear the enchanting melody of the Central Park Carousel. It’s a timeless tune that has spun generations of joy.

This isn’t just any carousel. It’s the Michael Friedsam Memorial Carousel. It’s the fourth to grace this spot in Central Park. The original 1871 carousel was truly unique. It was powered by a mule or horse hidden beneath. The operator signaled the animal with a foot tap.

Two successors met fiery ends in 1924 and 1950. Our current carousel? A survivor. Crafted in 1908 by Solomon Stein and Harry Goldstein. It began its life in a Coney Island trolley terminal. It wasn’t always here. In 1951 it found a new home. The Central Park Conservancy gave it a loving restoration in 1982. A generous donation made it possible.

The carousel boasts 57 hand-carved horses. Fifty-two are jumpers. Five standers wait patiently. Two chariots add to the regal feel. It’s one of the largest in the US. Nearly 250000 riders enjoy it yearly.

A 52-key A Ruth & Sohn Model 33 Band Organ plays waltzes. Marches and polkas fill the air. It’s been updated. Now a MIDI interface controls the tunes. It’s a delightful blend of old and new.

The carousel has seen fame. It’s been featured in movies like *Up The Sandbox*. It even appears in *The Punisher* TV series although that filming happened elsewhere.

A brass ring was a feature of the 1950 carousel. J D Salinger mentioned it in *The Catcher in the Rye*. Our carousel doesn’t have them. Yet it still holds a special charm. It’s a symbol of Central Park. It’s a piece of history waiting for you to make memories. Come ride.
