“Is that a spaceship or a building?” I overheard a child ask his mother while staring up at Via 57 West. This striking structure redefines Manhattan’s skyline. It’s not just a building it is a statement.
Via 57 West stands at 625 West 57th Street. It occupies a prominent place between 11th and 12th Avenues. Its location marks a dramatic entrance to Manhattan via 57th Street. This is where the West Side Highway slopes.
The Durst Organization commissioned Bjarke Ingels Group to design Via 57 West. Bjarke Ingels met Douglas Durst in the early 2000s. Durst was impressed by Ingels’ inventive approach. He noted that each design was unique and tailored to its locale.
Completed in 2016, Via 57 West is a residential building. It rises 467 feet or 142 meters. The building has 35 stories. Some call it the “pyramid” or “tetrahedron” because of its shape. Others see a warped pyramid. Another calls it a quarter of a watermelon.
From Manhattan, Via 57 West looks like a distorted pyramid. Its facade slopes steeply. Cross the river to Weehawken New Jersey. From there it resembles a large sailing vessel.
Via 57 West merges the American skyscraper with the European courtyard. This design creates a unique “courtscraper”. The integrated green plaza connects with the waterfront. It also connects with Hudson River Park.
The northern facade features balconies skewed at 45 degrees. This pattern is a signature of Ingels’ work. The building covers 830995 square feet. This includes both residential and retail spaces.
Inside Via 57 West there are 709 residential units. A lush 22000 square foot garden sits at its heart. Landscape architecture firm Starr Whitehouse designed this “bonsai Central Park”. It features 80 newly planted trees. There are also 47 species of native plants.
Amenities include lounges event spaces and a golf simulator. There is also a movie screening room. Residents can enjoy a pool and a basketball court. Game rooms offer poker ping pong and billiards.
The apartments feature a “Scandimerican” aesthetic. This blends Scandinavian and New York styles. Oak wood floors and white porcelain tiles create a modern feel.
Via 57 West has won several awards. These include the 2016 CTBUH Best Tall Building Americas award. It also won the 2016 International Highrise Award.
Notably, Landmark Theatres once operated an eight-screen movie theater here. It closed in August 2020. Look Cinemas reopened a dine-in theater in May 2023.
