Considering a thrill surpassing even the most daring flight? Then you have come to the right place. Here we are at the legendary Coney Island Cyclone. This iconic wooden roller coaster is not just a ride. It is a landmark.

The Coney Island Cyclone opened on June 26 in 1927. Vernon Keenan designed it. For a mere 25 cents, thrill-seekers could experience its exhilarating twists and drops. That equals about $4.21 in today’s money. Today a ride will cost you $10.

Early visitors claimed the Coney Island Cyclone offered an unparalleled adrenaline rush. Aviator Charles Lindbergh even said riding the Cyclone was better than flying an airplane at top speed. Imagine that for a moment.

The Coney Island Cyclone has a compact twister track layout. Its lift system is chain-driven. Riders ascend 85 feet before plunging down the first drop. The train hits a top speed of 60 miles per hour. The entire ride lasts about two minutes and thirty seconds. It has a maximum vertical angle of 58.1 degrees. That is intense.

Over the years the Coney Island Cyclone faced many challenges. By the 1960s, Coney Island was in decline. There was increased crime and insufficient parking. After World War II there was also an automotive boom. The city even considered demolishing the Cyclone in 1967. They wanted to expand the New York Aquarium.

A Save the Cyclone campaign emerged. It opposed demolishing Coney Island’s last wooden roller coaster. In 1975, the owners of Astroland amusement park won a lease to operate the ride. They refurbished it and reopened it on July 3 in 1975.

The Coney Island Cyclone was declared a New York City landmark on July 12 in 1988. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 26 in 1991. This secured its place in history.

The Coney Island Cyclone has inspired similar coasters worldwide. These include Viper at Six Flags Great America and Bandit at Movie Park Germany. Even though they are similar, none quite capture the original’s unique thrill.

The Coney Island Cyclone continues to thrill riders. It stands as a testament to Coney Island’s vibrant past. It is a reminder of the simple joys of a day at the amusement park. So, are you ready to experience a piece of history? A ride on the Coney Island Cyclone awaits.
