Did you know Fortitude is more than just a statue? It’s a symbol of resilience. Right here before you stands one of New York City’s most beloved icons. Fortitude a magnificent lion sculpted from pink Tennessee marble. It guards the entrance to the Stephen A Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library.

Mayor Fiorello La Guardia gave Fortitude and its companion Patience their names during the Great Depression. He believed these virtues embodied the spirit of New Yorkers. These names perfectly capture the essence of this enduring symbol. Fortitude represents the strength and courage to overcome adversity. It reflects the library’s commitment to preserving stories of struggle and triumph.

The lions were not always called Patience and Fortitude. Early suggestions included Leo Astor and Leo Lenox after the library’s co-founders. Even Teddy Roosevelt weighed in suggesting bison. Imagine the library with bison instead of lions! A very different image indeed.

The Fortitude sculpture is a masterpiece created by Edward Clark Potter and carved by the Piccirilli brothers in 1911. The lions are larger than life stretching over 11 feet not including their tails. They were unveiled just days before the library’s grand opening on May 23 1911.

Fortitude is more than just a beautiful sculpture. It’s a testament to the unwavering spirit of New York City and the power of perseverance. It silently stands watch over centuries of stories. This enduring symbol inspires us to face challenges with courage and grace. The next time you visit the New York Public Library remember the powerful story behind Fortitude. It embodies the city’s resilience and the enduring spirit of its people.
