Why do they call them the Rebels? We’re standing here in front of Riverdale High School, a place with a history as lively and spirited as its mascot. Right here in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, Riverdale High opened its doors in 1962, welcoming young women in grades 9 through 12. Originally an all-girls school, its mascot was a Scottish Lassie, a far cry from the Rebels we know today. But change was in the air. In 1980, Riverdale High School transformed, opening its doors to both young men and women. The mascot naturally evolved to a Scottish Rebel, a symbol of this bold new era. Riverdale even absorbed students from the closed Grace King High School in 2023, further solidifying its place in the community. Now, did you know that this school endured the wrath of Hurricane Katrina? While it sustained some damage, it was one of the first to reopen, becoming a beacon of hope during a difficult time. Today, Riverdale High School stands strong, a testament to its resilient spirit and commitment to education, just like those rebellious Scots who never back down from a challenge.
