High above Antigua’s bustling streets lies Alotenango a town steeped in history and nestled in a valley.

Alotenango a municipality in the Sacatepéquez department boasts a rich history dating back long before the Spanish arrived in 1524. The Popol Vuh mentions the town as Vucuc Caquix highlighting its significance in ancient Mayan culture. The original settlement lay a few kilometers south of its current location a testament to the changing landscape shaped by volcanic activity.

Imagine Bishop Francisco Marroquín in the 1540s dividing the central valley’s religious influence. Alotenango’s curato fell under the Franciscans a division that mirrored the valley’s geographical boundaries. This wasn’t just a religious split it fundamentally shaped the region’s political and social structure. The lack of separation between Church and State meant the curato division directly influenced the area’s governance.

Picture Eugenio Dussaussay a French writer in 1881 seeking permission to climb the practically unexplored volcano. He received a letter for Alotenango’s mayor requesting guides. The locals held the mountain in such high regard that even experienced climbers were hesitant to venture beyond a certain point. Only Rudecindo Zul a local guide dared to accompany him to the saddle between Fuego and Acatenango.

Alfred Percival Maudslay a renowned archaeologist embarked on his expedition to Volcán de Fuego from Alotenango in 1892. His detailed account in A Glimpse at Guatemala paints a vivid picture of the challenging climb through thick forests and loose soil. His journey from Alotenango serves as a reminder of the town’s role as a gateway to these majestic volcanoes.

Alotenango’s culture is a unique blend of Mayan and Hispanic traditions. The majority of inhabitants are Mayan Cakchiquel people although there’s debate about Nahua-speaking Pipil influences. Their unique traditions are celebrated especially during the June 24th festival honoring Saint John the Baptist the town’s patron saint. Even the way married couples leave their extended families reflects their strong cultural identity only doing so after several children are born.

Alotenango’s economy thrived on coffee production since the Justo Rufino Barrios era. The Capetillo farm a testament to this legacy started as a sugarcane plantation but later transitioned to coffee cultivation. By 1880 it boasted 200000 coffee trees its coffee winning the Grand Prize at the 1915 Universal Exhibition.

Today Alotenango sits proudly in the Antigua coffee region a testament to its resilience and enduring charm. It remains a vital part of Guatemala’s history offering visitors a glimpse into the fascinating interplay between ancient Mayan culture and modern-day life. This journey to the past is a must-experience in your trip to Antigua.
