Imagine the gentle lapping of brackish water against the shore. This is Lake Maurepas. It is a hidden gem nestled between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

Lake Maurepas is named for Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux. He was the comte de Maurepas. He was an eighteenth-century French statesman. He was also chief advisor to King Louis XVI. Interestingly, Lake Pontchartrain was named for his father, Louis Phélypeaux, comte de Pontchartrain.

Though often overshadowed by its larger neighbor, Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas boasts a significant size of its own. Spanning approximately 93 square miles, it is larger than Calcasieu Lake or Lake Salvador. Lake Maurepas is the second-largest lake fully in Louisiana.

Despite its size, Lake Maurepas remains relatively unknown. Few bass tournaments are held here. It is not a speckled trout mecca. People do not usually travel here specifically for crappie or catfish. Yet, local enthusiasts know its worth. Thin-fried Lake Maurepas catfish are a delicacy. Midendorf’s Restaurant in Manchac serves them.

One of the most striking features of Lake Maurepas is its unspoiled beauty. No cities or factories fringe its shores. Only the Interstate 55 bridge hints at civilization. Lush cypress and tupelo swamps surround the lake. They create a picturesque scene.

Lake Maurepas is a shallow, circular lake. Its average depth is about 9.8 feet. Four rivers feed into it. These are the Blind River, Amite River, Tickfaw River, and Natalbany River. Pass Manchac connects Lake Maurepas to Lake Pontchartrain. This pass influences the lake’s volume and salinity.

The salinity of Lake Maurepas ranges from 0 to 3 parts per thousand. It’s typically higher near Pass Manchac. The shallow depth causes sediment resuspension. This results in high turbidity and low transparency.

The Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area borders the lake. It is a protected area. It is home to various species. Bald eagles, ospreys, pink spoonbills, and alligators thrive here.

Recognizing the ecological importance of the area, there are efforts to restore the surrounding swamp. A project aims to divert water from the Mississippi River. This will provide essential nutrients to the swamp. The goal is to revitalize the ecosystem.

Lake Maurepas is more than just a body of water. It is a testament to Louisiana’s natural beauty. It is a reminder of the importance of conservation. It is a place where you can experience the tranquility of the Louisiana wilderness.
