Have you ever wondered about the unique history of Iglesia Escuela de Cristo? It stands right here in Antigua Guatemala, its facade a testament to the town’s resilience. It was founded in 1664 as a school and church by the Franciscan Friar Bernardino de Obregón y Obando. He dedicated the building to San Felipe Neri, the founder of the Oratorian order, giving it its other name: Congregación de San Felipe Neri. But earthquakes had their say. In 1717, a powerful tremor devastated Antigua Guatemala, causing serious damage to the building. This led to its reconstruction in 1730 under the direction of the esteemed Architect Diego de Porres. Looking closely at the building, you can still see its solid stone construction. This set it apart from many other churches in Antigua, where stucco was more common. It shows the influence of the Renaissance, with its symmetry and elegance. While the church still stands proudly, its original image of Jesus the Nazarene of the Three Potencies was lost to history’s storms. It was moved to Guatemala City after the devastating earthquake of 1773, when the capital of the entire kingdom was transferred. The church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, where the image was moved, is still honored by this church’s name, a lasting remembrance. So, let this elegant structure be a reminder of resilience and the enduring power of faith.
