Brother Pedro, as he was simply known, was not always destined for sainthood. Born Pedro de San José de Betancur y González, he came from humble beginnings as a shepherd in Tenerife, Spain. Driven by faith and a desire to serve, he traveled to Antigua, Guatemala, to dedicate his life to the poor and marginalized. He couldn’t have known that Antigua would become his final resting place. Brother Pedro’s journey wasn’t always easy. His dream of becoming a priest was sidelined when he struggled with academics. Undeterred, Brother Pedro found his calling in service to others at the Franciscan friary of Costa Rica in Antigua. He tended to the sick, the imprisoned, and the impoverished, always advocating for their dignity and well-being. Brother Pedro’s compassion led him to establish the Order of Our Lady of Bethlehem, known as the Bethlehemites. The order established hospitals and shelters, embodying his unwavering commitment to those in need. In 1667, exhausted but fulfilled, Brother Pedro died at the young age of 41.
