Ever wondered how a city could be both a gateway to ancient wonders and a modern hub? That city is Muğla. I am excited to share with you the story of Muğla. This city serves as the administrative capital of the Muğla Province. It is a region celebrated for its stunning Aegean coastline.

Muğla’s history stretches back to ancient times. It was once a minor settlement known as Mobolla. This was a stop between important Carian cities. These cities were Idrias and Idyma. Around the 2nd century BC, Mobolla became part of the Rhodian Peraea.

In 2018, archaeologists made a fascinating discovery near Muğla. They unearthed a 2,300-year-old rock sepulchre. This tomb belonged to Diagoras of Rhodes. He was a famous ancient Greek boxer. Locals had revered the site as a holy place. They even used it as a pilgrimage site until the 1970s.

Also in 2018, another exciting find occurred within the city. Ruins and mosaics were discovered. These belonged to the villa of Phainos. He was a Greek fisherman from the 2nd century AD. Phainos was known as the richest fisherman of his time.

Over the centuries, the town’s name evolved. It changed from Mobolla to Mogolla. Then it finally became Muğla. The Turks conquered it in the 13th century. It then came under the rule of the Menteşe dynasty. Muğla gained importance in 1420. It replaced Milas as the seat of the subprovince under the Ottoman Empire.

Muğla lies inland at an altitude of 660 meters. It is about 30 km from the Aegean coast. The city is set on a high plain. Mountains surround this plain. The landscape around Muğla can appear barren. This is due to its calcareous geology.

Muğla has transformed from a rural region into a more accessible area. The restoration of its architectural heritage has boosted tourism. Muğla retains its provincial charm. It proudly recalls having Turkey’s first female provincial governor Lale Aytaman in the 1990s. The economy relies on trade, agriculture, and tourism.

The Great Mosque of Muğla also known as Ulu Cami stands as a testament to the city’s rich past. It was built in 1344 by the Beys of Menteşe. The Konakaltı Han and Yağcılar Han are restored 18th-century caravanserais. The first one serves as an art gallery. The second is used for commercial purposes. The Kurşunlu Cami is a large mosque. It was built in 1495. The Muğla City Museum showcases archaeological and ethnographical artifacts. There are also 9-million-year-old fossils discovered nearby.

The Ottoman-era bazaar features a clock tower. A Greek craftsman named Filivari Usta built it in 1895. Vakıflar Hamam is a Turkish bath that dates back to 1258. It is still operating today. The old quarter of Muğla has about four hundred registered old houses. These houses date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Many have been restored.

Muğla has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are long, hot, and dry. Winters are cool and wet. The highest recorded temperature was 42.1 °C in 2007. The lowest was -12.6 °C in 1942.

Muğla stands as a city where history and modernity intertwine. Its ancient ruins, cultural landmarks, and natural beauty create a unique experience. Muğla offers visitors a glimpse into Turkey’s rich heritage.
