Consider the year 1565 when Şeyh Bedrettin decided to build a mosque. This is the Şeyh Camii in Muğla. It stands as a testament to Ottoman history.

The Şeyh Camii is located in the Şeyh neighborhood. The neighborhood shares the same name. This highlights its local importance.

Interestingly historical records often refer to it as Şeyh Bedrettin Camii. This emphasizes its founder’s role. Şeyh Bedrettin was a 16th-century Sufi mystic. He taught at the Kadı Mescidi. It was known as a religious school. His reputation was such that a neighborhood was named after him.

Evliya Çelebi visited Muğla in 1671. He mentioned the Şeyh Camii among the city’s artistic mosques. This shows the mosque was appreciated for its beauty.

Now let’s talk about appointments. Ottoman records show approximately 46 appointments related to the Şeyh Camii. These were made between 1700 and 1831. This is the highest number among Muğla mosques. It indicates the mosque’s administrative significance.

Imagine this minaret was not part of the original structure. It was added in the early 1800s. The mosque has undergone many renovations over the centuries.

The Şeyh Camii has two courtyards on its north and south sides. Here lie the graves of important figures. Şeyh Bedrettin is buried here. Also buried here are Kadı Süleyman Efendi and Hafız Ahmet Efendi. Muğla Mufti Bekir Efendi is also interred here. These graves reflect the intellectual legacy of the mosque.

Today the Şeyh Camii continues to serve as a place of worship. A Quran school is in its garden. This school is affiliated with the Muğla Mufti.

Some claim that the Şeyh Camii was initially known as Kadı Mahallesi Mescidi. Zekai Mete suggests this. He believes it began to be called Şeyh Bedrettin’s name in the mid-16th century. Ekrem Uykucu writes that the mosque existed in 1560. He cites the foundation records.

Ali Rıza Hakses states that the Şeyh Camii underwent two repairs in the 19th century. According to one account it was built in 1465. The first repair was in 1831. This was carried out by Tavash Osman Aga’s wife. Osman Aga was the Menteşe Mutasarrıf. The second repair was in 1896. It was carried out by Şerif Efendi and Ragıp Efendi. The most recent restoration was in 2007.

The Şeyh Camii stands as a landmark. It reflects Muğla’s rich cultural heritage. Its story connects us to the Ottoman era. It reminds us of the scholars and mystics who shaped this region.
