“Did you know that even Tarzan once roamed these grounds?” I ask. We’re standing before Iglesia de San Francisco in Antigua. This isn’t just another beautiful colonial church. It’s a place where history, faith, and even Hollywood collide.
Iglesia de San Francisco is one of Antigua’s most significant religious sites. Its story stretches back to the 16th century. The Franciscans, among the first to arrive in Guatemala, built here. They started construction in 1579. The church you see today wasn’t inaugurated until 1702. Imagine how different Antigua looked then.
The Franciscans were assigned income from 120 Maya villages. This helped fund their grand projects. Iglesia de San Francisco became a major religious and cultural hub. Its school taught theology, law, philosophy, physics, and mathematics.
Look closely at the facade. Notice the twisted salomonic columns. This style is typical of Spanish-American baroque architecture. See the sixteen vaulted niches. Each holds a saint or friar. They include the Virgin Mary and San Antonio de Padua.
The church has faced numerous earthquakes. The worst was in 1773. It left the school, monastery, and church in ruins for almost two centuries. Restoration didn’t begin until 1960. The facade dates back to 1674.
Iglesia de San Francisco is also a pilgrimage site. People come to honor Santo Hermano Pedro. He was Guatemala’s first saint. He is known for his charity and help to the poor and sick. His tomb is inside. Many seek favors and miracles there.
Hermano Pedro was canonized in 2002. Before that, he walked these streets. He rang his bell at night. This warned people to repent and helped those in need. You can still see his bell in the museum.
Inside the church, find the Cristo de las Ánimas. It’s a crucifix made of corn husks. Locals call it Cristo de Tuza. It dates back to the 17th century.
Outside, note the Esquisuchil tree near Hermano Pedro’s tomb. He planted it himself in 1657. This tree is one of several he planted throughout Antigua.
Remember I mentioned Tarzan? The ruins of San Francisco were used in the 1935 film “The New Adventures of Tarzan”. The movie was filmed entirely in Guatemala. Iglesia de San Francisco provided a dramatic backdrop.
Take a moment to wander the monastery ruins. Once, this was one of the largest convents in the city. Today, it’s a peaceful place for reflection.
Each year during Holy Week or Semana Santa, Antigua’s famous processions pass by Iglesia de San Francisco. The church plays a central role in these religious celebrations. The processions honor the Passion of Christ.
