Whispers of history echo across Khor Muscat. Here, nestled beside the Al-Alam Palace, rests the Al-Khor Mosque. This mosque, once known as the Mosque of Martyrs, has borne witness to centuries of Omani history. Khor Muscat itself lends its name to this sacred place. The name refers to the inlets created by the tide crashing against the rocky Muscat coastline. The mosque stands as a testament to Omani resilience. Funeral prayers were held here for those who fell defending Oman from Portuguese invaders in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, the Al-Khor Mosque serves as a place of worship for senior members of the Omani royal family, earning it the nickname, the Family Mosque. The mosque’s appearance is striking. Tinted glass adorns much of its exterior walls. This unique feature, coupled with white marble, blue and brown tiles, and golden Quranic inscriptions, creates a mesmerizing visual display. Inside, the tinted glass casts a soft, ethereal glow. Look up to admire the ceiling. It features the ninety-nine names of Allah, each written in gold calligraphy on blue and white tiles. A simple crystal chandelier hangs in the main prayer hall. Interestingly, the Al-Khor Mosque lacks the central dome typical of many Omani mosques. This hidden gem, tucked away behind Al-Alam Palace near Al-Mirani Fort, offers a tranquil escape amidst the bustling city. Visiting Al-Khor Mosque is a peaceful way to conclude a tour of the Al-Alam Palace area. Remember, it’s open to non-Muslims from 8 am to 11 am, Saturday to Wednesday. Dress modestly, as is customary in any place of worship.
