Gazing up at the Katedraly Anglikana Santa Laurent Ambohimanoro, one might hear whispers of its rich history. This grand cathedral, also known as Saint Laurent, stands proudly on Ambohimanoro hill in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The Katedraly Anglikana Santa Laurent Ambohimanoro isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and a symbol of the intertwining of cultures. Its story begins in a time of religious persecution in Madagascar under Queen Ranavalona I. Christianity was suppressed, and church buildings were forbidden. However, the winds of change began to blow with subsequent monarchs. European influence grew, and the suppression of Christians eased. Missionaries, including those from the London Missionary Society, were welcomed back. A pivotal moment arrived with the conversion of Queen Ranavalona II to Christianity, partly due to her European upbringing. During this period, Anglican missionaries arrived, sent by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. Among them was Bishop Kestell Kestell-Cornish, the first Anglican bishop in Madagascar. He initially held services in a modest wooden church near the current site of the Katedraly Anglikana Santa Laurent Ambohimanoro. With permission finally granted, the foundation stone of the cathedral was laid in 1883 by Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony, with Bishop Kestell-Cornish presiding. The Katedraly Anglikana Santa Laurent Ambohimanoro, designed by English architect William White and built by Norwegian Alfred Anker, showcases a stunning neo-Gothic style. Completed in 1889, it has undergone several renovations over the years. These include the replacement of the original stained-glass windows, imported from England, and the roof tiles. The cathedral’s significance extends beyond its religious function. In 2017, Princess Anne attended a service at the Katedraly Anglikana Santa Laurent Ambohimanoro. The service commemorated 200 years of diplomatic relations between Madagascar and the United Kingdom. This event marked the highest-ranking member of the British royal family to officially visit the cathedral. Today, the Katedraly Anglikana Santa Laurent Ambohimanoro stands as a national heritage site. It reminds us of the journey of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
