Erich Hauser’s Doppelsäule 23/70. A sculpture that doesn’t whisper, but shouts its presence. Right here in Munich, between the Alte and Neue Pinakothek, this seven-meter-tall stainless steel giant commands attention. The Doppelsäule 23/70 became a permanent resident of this space in 1984. It joined the Pinakothek Sculpture Park, adding another layer of artistic expression to this vibrant area. The Doppelsäule 23/70 isn’t just a random arrangement of metal. It’s a carefully crafted composition of two columns. These columns, reaching towards the sky, abruptly break open at their apex. They twist and intertwine, their straight edges creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. Hauser, a master of “the grammar of steel,” numbered his works rather than giving them descriptive titles. So, we have Doppelsäule 23/70, a piece from 1970, standing as a testament to Hauser’s unique approach. This sculpture was initially part of the Theo Wormland collection, on loan to the Bavarian State Painting Collections. In 2013, the Doppelsäule 23/70 found its forever home. It was gifted to the Bavarian State Painting Collections by the Stiftung. Take a moment. Let your eyes trace the lines of the Doppelsäule 23/70. Appreciate the way the polished steel reflects the sky and the surrounding buildings. Hauser’s work invites us to contemplate the relationship between form and space. It’s a dialogue of steel and sky, a conversation you are now a part of.
