Have you ever wondered what the tallest buildings in Munich look like on a sunny day? You could probably guess that they have magnificent views. Well, one special building in particular has stood for centuries as a symbol of Munich. The Frauenkirche, also known as the Cathedral Church of Our Lady is a prominent landmark and one of the largest hall churches in Southern Germany. It had its foundations laid in 1468 and took over two decades to complete. It’s a magnificent piece of architecture that boasts impressive towers and a fascinating history. The legend goes that the architect, Jörg von Halsbach, struck a deal with the devil to finish the building. In exchange for funding, the devil asked for the building to have no windows. Cleverly, the architect obscured the windows so that they weren’t visible from the entrance hall. This, however, didn’t fool the devil. After all, the church was overflowing with light. When he was led to this spot, the devil angrily slammed his foot down on the tiled floor, leaving a mark. This iconic mark on the floor is known as the Devil’s Footprint. Today, the Frauenkirche is open and visited by millions of people each year for its beauty and its historical significance. The towers are open to the public, and you can even climb up the south tower for an unforgettable panorama of the city. The next time you come to Munich, be sure to visit the Frauenkirche, especially the Devil’s Footprint, and let your imagination run wild, imagining how this incredible building came to be.
