The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue stands as a testament to the life and work of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a 20th-century Indian intellectual and social reformer. The statue is located within the Indu Mills Compound, in the Dadar area of Mumbai. The project began in 2015 with the laying of the foundation stone by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Originally slated for a much earlier completion, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue has faced various delays. The contract for its construction was finally awarded in 2018 to the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. The statue itself is an impressive 137.3 meters tall, including its pedestal. This makes the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue one of the tallest statues in the world, surpassed only by the Statue of Unity and the Spring Temple Buddha. The memorial surrounding the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue is designed to be more than just a viewing point. It will encompass a stupa, a Vipassana (meditation) hall, and a Gallery of Struggle showcasing key events from Ambedkar’s life. The stupa, a central element of the memorial, is designed to be 140 feet tall with a ribbed ceiling reminiscent of Buddhist Chaityas. The planned Vipassana hall is expected to have a seating capacity for an astounding 13,000 people. The memorial complex also includes plans for a 50,000-square-foot library and museum, further highlighting Ambedkar’s legacy. The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue has not been without controversy. Members of Ambedkar’s family and other leaders voiced concerns about the design and its practical details, suggesting that the memorial should be more reflective of his stature and include an intellectual center. Despite the delays and controversies, the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Statue is poised to become a significant landmark in Mumbai, honoring a towering figure in Indian history.
