Overlooking the Arabian Sea, the Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens offer a tranquil escape. These gardens, also known as the Hanging Gardens, aren’t truly “hanging” in the traditional sense. They are terraced gardens, built on top of Malabar Hill’s western side, directly across from Kamala Nehru Park. The Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens were designed in 1881 by Ulhas Ghatkopar. He cleverly built them atop Mumbai’s main reservoir. One theory suggests this design was intended to shield the reservoir from the nearby Towers of Silence. These towers, used for excarnation, were thought to potentially contaminate the water. The gardens provide breathtaking sunset views. They feature a whimsical touch: numerous hedges sculpted into the shapes of animals. From above, the pathways within Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens create a cursive script, spelling out “PMG.” This hidden detail adds a touch of magic to these already enchanting gardens. A visit to the Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens is more than just a stroll through a park. It’s a journey through a unique blend of history, ingenuity, and artistry.
