Tucked away in Mumbai’s Mazagaon neighborhood, the Kwan Tai Shek Temple whispers tales of a forgotten community. This vibrant temple stands as the last vestige of Mumbai’s once-thriving Chinatown. The Kwan Tai Shek Temple isn’t your typical grand temple. It resides on the upper floor of an unassuming two-story house on Nawab Tank Road. Built in 1919, the Kwan Tai Shek Temple served the Cantonese migrants who worked at the nearby docks for the East India Company. The temple is dedicated to General Kwan Tai Kon, revered as a symbol of justice and guidance. As you approach the temple, you’ll notice a mural near the wooden staircase. It depicts three deities: the Chinese gods of blessing, longevity, and prosperity. The temple itself is a single, large room dominated by a red altar adorned with gold carvings. Above the altar, a painting portrays Kwan Kung, the Chinese god of justice, protection, and courage. A statue of Kwan Tai Kwon, the mighty warrior god, also holds a place of honor. Offerings of paper money, gold and silver paper, incense, and envelopes filled with rice or money lie on a small table before the deities. Visitors can also find Kau cim, fortune-telling sticks dating back to the third century. The temple’s caretakers, the Tham family, live on the first floor. Albert Tham, a lifelong resident, embodies the spirit of the Chinese-Indian community, calling Mumbai home despite the dwindling numbers. The Kwan Tai Shek Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It is a living testament to a community’s resilience, a poignant reminder of a vibrant past, and a symbol of the enduring cultural tapestry of Mumbai.
