Have you ever heard the saying “Either it rains or the church bells ring”? This quaint phrase, reflecting the somewhat rainy character of Muenster, is also closely linked to Angelmodde. Here, in the southeastern part of the city, the Angelmodde, named after the confluence of the Werse and Angel rivers, is a place steeped in history and charm.

Angelmodde was once a small village, surrounded by water and accessible only by poorly maintained paths. It even faced complete destruction after a fire in 1832, and its residents had to rebuild everything from scratch. Then came the 20th century, bringing rapid change to the area. In the 1950s, new houses sprang up, especially for British soldiers stationed nearby. Churches like Friedenskirche and St. Bernhard-Kirche were built, as well as schools like Annette-Schule and Osthuesheide-Volksschule. This growth was so fast that Angelmodde became one of the fastest-growing communities in the country for a while.

Today, Angelmodde, officially part of Muenster since 1975, is a place of contrasts. You can still see the remnants of its traditional character in the small historical center of Angelmodde-Dorf, with its centuries-old church. But Angelmodde-West and Angelmodde-Waldsiedlung, with their newer buildings, demonstrate the area’s modern development.

You might be wondering what makes Angelmodde special. One of its most notable landmarks is the Gallitzin-Haus, a beautifully restored building that houses a museum dedicated to Amalie von Gallitzin, a noblewoman with close ties to the literary elite of her time. She lived in Angelmodde for 27 years, after moving from a city apartment in Muenster, and was buried in the churchyard. The Gallitzin-Haus is a testament to Angelmodde’s artistic tradition, as it was once known as Muenster’s “artist village.”

So, the next time you’re in Muenster, take a moment to explore Angelmodde, a place with a rich history and a unique blend of tradition and modernity. It’s a perfect example of how history, nature, and human ingenuity can weave together a fascinating tapestry.
