You might not guess it from its unassuming exterior, but this is the Musikhochschule, the University of Music of Münster. Don’t let its integration into the larger University of Münster fool you. This institution boasts a rich history, deeply intertwined with the city’s cultural fabric.
Founded in 1972, the Musikhochschule initially existed as a branch of the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. However, it carved its own path in 2004, becoming a distinct faculty within the University of Münster. This transition marked a defining moment, establishing it as a pioneer. In fact, it became the very first music school in Germany to offer the Bachelor of Music degree.
Today, the Musikhochschule welcomes a vibrant community of around 220 students. They hone their skills under the guidance of 15 distinguished professors, representing a diverse range of musical traditions from countries like Brazil, Holland, and Norway. They are further enriched by the expertise of 65 part-time instructors who bring their own unique perspectives to the mix.
The Musikhochschule’s influence extends far beyond these walls. Its talented alumni have graced prestigious stages worldwide. From the percussive prowess of Cico Beck to the captivating vocals of Christoph Stegemann, graduates of this institution leave an undeniable mark on the world of music. Even if its walls could talk, they couldn’t fully capture the magic that unfolds within the Musikhochschule.
