Ever wondered about a place where tradition meets innovation? That place is Kreis Coesfeld. It sits in Muensterland in Westfalen in the north of North Rhine-Westfalen. Established on January 1 1975 Kreis Coesfeld resulted from the Muenster/Hamm Law during a district reform.

Kreis Coesfeld is more than just geography. It’s a region steeped in history. The highest point in the Kreis Coesfeld is the Longinusturm in the Baumberge. It stands 187 meters above sea level.

Let’s journey back in time. The municipal reorganization from 1967 to 1975 shaped Kreis Coesfeld. The districts of Luedinghausen and Coesfeld merged in 1975. Nottuln Havixbeck and parts of the former Muenster district joined too.

Political leadership also evolved. Before 1994 a dual leadership existed. Since then the Landrat leads the Kreistag and Kreis administration. Christian Schulze Pellengahr has been the Landrat since 2015.

Kreis Coesfeld’s coat of arms tells a story. Adopted in 1979 it combines symbols of old districts. A bishop a goose and a bell each have significance. Saint Liudger the first bishop of Muenster is represented. The goose symbolizes a legend of finding water. The bell recalls another Liudgerus legend.

Economically Kreis Coesfeld thrives on small and medium-sized businesses. The consumer goods chemical industry and mechanical engineering sectors stand out. Its strong economic base results in a balanced mix of opportunities.

Getting around Kreis Coesfeld is easy. Several railway lines crisscross the district. The Westmuensterland Railway and Baumberge Railway serve the area. The Autobahn A1 A43 and A31 connect Kreis Coesfeld to major cities.

Kreis Coesfeld boasts a high density of castles and palaces. It also maintains one of the lowest unemployment rates in North Rhine-Westphalia. Residents value traditions care for each other and welcome guests. They gladly share stories in both High German and Muensterland Platt.

Looking ahead Kreis Coesfeld embraces the future. It is committed to fast internet access and sustainable mobility. Farms have helped lay fiber optic cables. Initiatives include express buses car sharing and e-bike rentals. All of these projects contribute to an even more liveable Kreis Coesfeld.

Kreis Coesfeld also has partnerships. Since December 14 2018 it has been twinned with the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin in Brandenburg. Through innovation Kreis Coesfeld builds bridges.
