Amidst the vibrant Geistviertel, stands the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. It’s a quiet sentinel of faith, reflecting the spirit of a community. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and concrete, a testament to a city’s resilience and a community’s faith. In the bustling heart of Münster, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche stands as a unique landmark. Its story begins in the 1920s, a time of growth and renewal for the city. The Geistviertel, once farmland, was rapidly expanding. The community, part of St. Joseph parish, needed a spiritual home. In 1924, their request for land was granted. A plot on Metzer Straße became the future site of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche. A competition was launched to find the perfect design. Renowned architect Dominikus Böhm presided over the jury. In 1927, Walter Kremer’s design, dubbed “Johann Konrad Schlaun”, was chosen. His vision reflected the “New Objectivity” style, a stark contrast to Münster’s traditional churches. Construction began in 1928, amidst economic hardship. The first three bells rang out in 1929, the same year the Heilig-Geist-Kirche became its own parish. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche played a pivotal role in Münster’s history. In 1947, it hosted the enthronement of Bishop Michael Keller. The St.-Paulus-Dom was still under reconstruction after the war. The current bells, with their distinctive tones, were cast in 1947. The church’s design is a fascinating blend of the old and new. Kremer reinterpreted the late Gothic pseudobasilica style, adding modern elements like the cantilevered balcony on the tower. This distinctive feature, designed for trumpeters, is a hallmark of “New Building” architecture. The church’s simple brick exterior earned it the nickname “Druffels Pütt,” or “Druffel’s Mine,” after the parish priest. Inside, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche is bright and airy. High, narrow windows illuminate the white walls. Ludwig Baur’s frescoes adorn the elevated choir. The church also houses a 1948 Klingenhegel organ. It boasts 37 registers and a unique open-pipe facade. In 1990, an arson attempt led to the installation of the current light grey pews. The Heilig-Geist-Kirche stands as a symbol of resilience. In 2013, it merged with St. Joseph, but its story continues. This unique blend of history, architecture, and community spirit makes the Heilig-Geist-Kirche a truly special place in Münster.
