Silent witness. The Lepramuseum stands before us, a solemn reminder of a time when leprosy cast a long shadow over humanity. The Lepramuseum, located in the Kinderhaus district of Muenster, is more than just a museum. It’s a former leper house, offering us a poignant glimpse into the lives of those ostracized by this dreaded disease. Leprosy, one of the oldest and most feared diseases known to man, affected people for centuries. Here at the Lepramuseum, we can explore the history of the disease in Muenster and learn about its impact on the community. The museum houses a variety of exhibits, including the workhouse, the provisor’s house, and the surrounding wall with its haunting hatch. Step inside the specially built Lazarus house and you’ll find stone sculptures of Lazarus, Gertrude of Nivelles (the patron saint of leprosy), and the Church of Saint Joseph. The Lepramuseum serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, reminding us of the importance of compassion and understanding.
