Wonder how a Jesuit College transformed into one of Germany’s largest universities? That’s the story of the University of M\u00fcnster.
This public research university in North Rhine-Westphalia boasts over 43000 students. It offers more than 120 fields of study across 15 departments. The University of M\u00fcnster is Germany’s fifth largest university. It is a major center for German intellectual life.

Pope Urban VIII and Emperor Ferdinand II granted privileges in 1631. These allowed a university in M\u00fcnster. Due to funding shortages, they were not used until 1780. Then the modern University of M\u00fcnster was founded. It began with four faculties: Law, Medicine, Philosophy, and Theology.
In 1843, it was renamed Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy. People informally called it M\u00fcnster Academy. Emperor Wilhelm II renamed it Westphalian Wilhelm University on August 22, 1907. The university officially became the University of M\u00fcnster in 2023.
The M\u00fcnster School of Business Administration and Economics pioneered bachelor’s and master’s degrees. This happened with the start of the Bologna Process in 1999. By the winter semester of 2006 or 2007, almost all studies followed the Bachelor or Master system. Exceptions existed for Staatsexamen programs. These were in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and law.
The Universit\u00e4ts- und Landesbibliothek M\u00fcnster serves as the central library. It also acts as the regional library of Westphalia. As of 2011, the library held over 6.2 million volumes. The ULB held 2.68 million. Faculty and department libraries held 3.53 million volumes. This included over 47000 electronic articles and newspapers.
The university has a very active student life. Its sports club offers over 100 sports courses. There are also sports tours, further education, and international tournaments. The IT organization provides central services. These support information processing and communication technology. The language center offers traditional language courses and tandem courses.
