Through the clamor of wartime Moscow, a determined group of soldiers emerged, ready to etch their names into the annals of history. This is the story of the 10th Guards Airborne Division, a unit whose courage and sacrifice helped turn the tide of World War II. The 10th Guards Airborne Division plaque before you commemorates their extraordinary service during the Great Patriotic War, their contribution to the defense of Vnukovo Airport, and their unwavering dedication to the Supreme High Command. Formed on December 8, 1942, near Moscow, the division honed its skills before being thrust into the crucible of battle. Their first major engagement came south of Staraya Russa, where they fought with unrelenting ferocity against the German forces. In September 1943, the division found itself near Kharkov, a city scarred by conflict. Here, they played a vital role in the crossing of the Dnieper River, a strategic maneuver that pushed the Germans back. Their courage in securing a bridgehead under heavy fire proved their mettle. The division’s next objective was Krivoi Rog, a city of strategic importance. The 10th Guards Airborne Division liberated Krivoi Rog in a decisive victory, earning them the honorary title “Krivoi Rog” in recognition of their bravery. This victory was a turning point in the war, and it cemented their place as one of the Red Army’s most formidable units. Their relentless advance continued as they pushed towards Odessa, securing key locations along the Southern Bug and capturing the vital railway junction of Rozdilna. Their contribution to the Odessa Offensive earned them the prestigious Order of the Red Banner. But their fight was far from over. They crossed the Dniester River, battling to secure and hold multiple bridgeheads. Following a period of replenishment, they joined the Second Jassy–Kishinev Offensive, driving deep into enemy territory, liberating Comrat, Basarabeasca, and Leova, and capturing thousands of enemy soldiers. Their exceptional performance in this offensive was recognized with the Order of Suvorov, 2nd class. After crossing the Danube and advancing through Bulgaria, the division reached Belgrade, then joined the 57th Army’s advance into Austria, where they ultimately helped liberate Graz, bringing an end to their wartime journey. The 10th Guards Airborne Division’s legacy, however, extends beyond their battlefield victories. Their unwavering dedication, resilience, and sacrifice symbolize the spirit of the Red Army and the Soviet people’s determination to defend their homeland. The 10th Guards Airborne Division Plaque stands as a testament to their remarkable service, a reminder of their courage in the face of adversity, and a tribute to their enduring contribution to victory.
