Has anyone ever heard of a church built in stages? FJKM Anosivavaka in Ambohimanarina, Antananarivo, has a unique history. Its construction unfolded in three distinct phases. The first stage, a simple “Trano Zozoro” (rush house), was erected between 1869 and 1889. It stood east of the current church building. The second, a “Trano Tsivalana” (transitional house), was built west of the present-day structure and served the community from 1889 to 1925. Finally, the present church, started in 1921 and completed in 1925, stands as a testament to the community’s dedication. FJKM Anosivavaka’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s intertwined with the seven pastors who led the congregation. Each played a crucial role in nurturing the faith and guiding the community’s progress. Rainizafinjoto, the first pastor (1869-1889), spearheaded the construction of the first church and inspired many to embrace Protestantism. Rainiketamanga (1889-1912), assisted the first pastor and led the construction of the second, transitional church building. Rainitsimba (1913-1941) oversaw the construction of the current FJKM Anosivavaka and witnessed a significant event, known as the “Miracle of September 8, 1929”. Rambeloson Edmond (1941-1974) focused on education, both spiritual and secular, establishing the Protestant School of Anosivavaka Ambohimanarina. Randriamahazosoa Jean (1974-1994) oversaw the first expansion of the present church, which included a new altar. He also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the “Descent of the Holy Spirit” in 1979. Ramangarivo Zoly S.M. (1994-2009) added an annex to mark the church’s 130th anniversary and created the “Sehatra Maitso” (Green Space) of Anosivavaka. Lastly, Rafaralahimanana Jean Chrysostome (2009-present) continues to lead FJKM Anosivavaka, focusing on renovations of the church and parish house to celebrate the church’s 150th jubilee. The spiritual life of FJKM Anosivavaka is further enriched by eight branches and seven organizations. These groups actively share the Gospel and fulfill the church’s mission.
