Remember Jacques Cartier’s fascination. It happened here at Parc des Rapides. He first saw the Lachine Rapids in 1535. This park offers an up-close view of those very rapids. Parc des Rapides is more than just a pretty spot. It is a place steeped in history and teeming with life.

Parc des Rapides spans 30 hectares. That equals 74 acres. Since 1937 this has been a migratory bird sanctuary. Over 225 bird species call it home. Among them is the great blue heron a protected species. Birdwatchers flock here to see them.

Archaeological digs happened here in 1984. They unearthed artifacts. These proved First Nations people lived here over 2000 years ago. Heron Island Goat Island and Boquet presque isle were staging areas. Iroquois fishermen used them.

Parc des Rapides holds more secrets. Look closely. You can find old foundations. These are from the Lachine hydroelectric station. It was built in 1897 and torn down in 1948. You might also spot ruins of old water mills. These mills operated between 1712 and 1869.

Today Parc des Rapides offers many things. There are paths for bikes and hikes. In winter enjoy cross-country skiing trails. The Vague à Guy or Guy’s Wave is a highlight. It is created by the Lachine Rapids. Marked paths lead to the water. Some park areas are only open during certain hours.

For thrill-seekers the Lachine Rapids deliver. White-water rafters and kayakers challenge the waters. You can even rent kayaks here. Classes teach you to surf or kayak the rapids. Feeling extra bold? Try jet-boating.

The park includes a landscaped lookout. Explanatory panels tell the story of the rapids. They also detail the old hydroelectric station. So take a stroll learn some history and watch the birds.

Parc des Rapides is a narrow strip of land. It stretches about 800 meters. You can walk its length in about twenty minutes. The further south you walk the fewer people you will see.
