Founded in 1897 Montreal West separated from Notre-Dame-de-Grâce-Ouest. It began with just 50 houses and 350 residents. A small close-knit community it is known for its charming single-family homes. Westminster Avenue its main street is a hub of activity. Sherbrooke Street a major Montreal artery ends here.

Montreal West boasts a unique history. In 2002 it merged with other suburbs into the city of Montreal. It became part of the Côte-Saint-Luc–Hampstead–Montreal West borough. However following a 2004 referendum residents voted overwhelmingly to become independent again. In 2006 Montreal West was reconstituted as an independent city. This demonstrates the strong sense of community identity.

Today Montreal West thrives. Its population hovers around 5000. The town features a blend of architectural styles. Mature trees line the streets creating a peaceful atmosphere. Elizabeth Ballantyne Elementary School and Edinburgh Elementary School offer English and French immersion programs.
