Founded in 1907 Union United Church stands as a testament to resilience. It’s Montreal’s oldest Black congregation a beacon of faith and community. Imagine a time when racial prejudice barred Black people from many churches. These courageous individuals sought a place of worship where they could freely express their devotion. With just $1.83 they established Union Congregational Church. Their first service was held in a Welsh Dance Hall. Twenty-six souls gathered a powerful beginning.

The church grew rapidly. It moved several times reflecting its expanding community. The Coloured Women’s Club of Montreal played a crucial role supporting this burgeoning faith. This club the oldest Black women’s club in Canada offered vital assistance. Their support sustained Union through its early years.

Union United Church became a central hub for Montreal’s Black community. It wasn’t just a place of worship. It served as a meeting ground a social center. Numerous Black organizations found a home within its walls. The Negro Community Centre flourished in its basement. Think of the Excelsior Debating and Dramatic Club the Negro Theatre Guild the Phyllis Wheatley Art Club. All were nurtured within Union’s embrace.

The church faced challenges. In the 1970s a planned metro expansion threatened its existence. Historian Leo W Bertley rallied support. His book Montreal’s Oldest Black Congregation preserved its history. This ultimately helped save the church. The Lionel Groulx station was built without harming it.

Throughout its history Union United Church has welcomed renowned visitors. Stokely Carmichael Rosemary Brown Sydney Poitier Bishop Desmond Tutu Nelson Mandela and many others graced its sanctuary. The church’s legacy extends beyond its walls. It has been a champion of social justice. It actively fought against apartheid. It continues its outreach to the community.

Today Union United Church remains a vibrant center. It’s a place of worship and community. It’s a living legacy a reminder of perseverance faith and the enduring spirit of Montreal’s Black community. It’s a place you should visit.
