Amidst the urban tapestry of Montreal, the Montreal Quebec Temple stands as a beacon of faith. This sacred edifice, the 86th operating temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has a rich history interwoven with the growth of the Church in Quebec. The story of the Montreal Quebec Temple begins long before its granite walls graced the Longueuil landscape. The Church’s presence in Montreal dates back to the 1920s. Missionaries arrived in 1918, sowing the seeds of faith in a predominantly Catholic province. The first French-speaking congregation was established in 1961. This marked a turning point, allowing the gospel to be shared in the native tongue of many Quebecois. The dream of a temple in Montreal became a reality in 1998. Church President Gordon B. Hinckley announced the plans, envisioning it as part of his ambitious goal of 100 operating temples worldwide by 2000. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 9, 1999. The site, a 2.4-acre plot in Longueuil, was chosen to house this sacred structure. The Montreal Quebec Temple was dedicated on June 4, 2000, by President Hinckley. Over 6,000 members attended the dedicatory sessions, marking a milestone for the Latter-day Saints in Quebec. The temple, with its 10,700 square feet, two ordinance rooms, and two sealing rooms, became a spiritual haven for members from Montreal, Ottawa, Montpelier, and upstate New York. The temple’s exterior, crafted from Bethel white granite from Vermont, gleamed against the Quebec sky. In 2014, the Montreal Quebec Temple underwent extensive renovations. The structure was reinforced, water damage was repaired, and the interior spaces were refreshed. Beautiful landscape murals were added to the ordinance rooms. The exterior also received subtle updates, giving it a renewed appearance. The temple reopened its doors in November 2015 with a public open house. Thousands visited to admire the enhancements. The rededication, performed by President Henry B. Eyring, marked a new chapter in the temple’s history. The Montreal Quebec Temple stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the Latter-day Saints in Quebec. It symbolizes the growth of the Church in Canada and the enduring power of faith.
