In the heart of Montreal, Saint James United Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This magnificent structure has witnessed the ebb and flow of city life since its construction in 1889. Saint James United Church wasn’t always located here. The congregation originally resided on St. James Street. Their move uptown led to the church’s current name. Upon completion, it held the title of the largest Methodist church in Canada. It boasted an impressive 2,000 seats, earning it the nickname “Cathedral Church of Methodism.” The church’s history is deeply intertwined with the United Church of Canada. In 1925, the Methodists, Congregationalists, and a majority of Presbyterians united to form this new denomination. Saint James United Church embraced this change, reflecting the evolving religious landscape of Canada. The church’s impact extends beyond its religious services. Its congregation established North America’s first YMCA in 1851, showcasing their commitment to community service. They also championed women’s suffrage in the early 20th century, demonstrating their progressive values. Inside Saint James United Church, a poignant World War I memorial window stands as a tribute to sacrifice. Created in 1924 by Charles William Kelsey, it depicts a trench scene. This artwork honors the 32 members who lost their lives overseas and the 267 who served in the Great War. The window’s sidelights symbolize the cardinal virtues: Justice, Prudence, Temperance, and Fortitude. The church’s exterior holds a unique story. In 1927, financial constraints led to a commercial building being erected in front of the Sainte Catherine Street façade. This addition obscured the church for 78 years. Only a large neon sign hinted at its presence. In 2005, an $8-million restoration project, supported by the city of Montreal and the Quebec government, revitalized Saint James United Church. The obstructing commercial structures were partially demolished. The church’s façade was revealed, and a new public square designed by Claude Cormier emerged. This transformation restored the church’s prominence within the city’s landscape. Saint James United Church stands proudly once again, its history etched in its stones, a symbol of resilience, faith, and community engagement.
