Step inside the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario y Santo Domingo, a stunning church where history and faith intertwine. Erected in the early 20th century, this church stands as a monument to the enduring legacy of the Dominican order in Montevideo. It’s a testament to their unwavering dedication to their faith and to the community. The church’s striking Neo-Mudéjar style, a unique architectural blend inspired by Moorish influences, sets it apart from other churches in the city. The intricate details of its facade and the soaring brick tower are a visual feast, reflecting a harmonious marriage of European and Islamic aesthetics.

The church’s origins lie in the determination of a group of Dominican friars who arrived from Argentina in 1936. They envisioned a place of worship and a community center where they could spread their faith and nurture the spiritual growth of the residents of Montevideo. In 1941, they chose the Cordón neighborhood as the site for their new church. The construction took years, but the hard work and dedication of the friars and local artisans finally culminated in the consecration of the church on January 6, 1947.

The church quickly became a focal point for the community, hosting a wide range of events and activities, including religious ceremonies, social gatherings, and educational programs. It became a haven for those seeking solace, guidance, and a sense of belonging. The parish was later established on May 18, 1958, solidifying its role as a spiritual anchor for the Cordón neighborhood.
