Was it a promise of change or a calculated deception? The Corpus Christi Massacre, etched into the memory of this city, continues to provoke that very question. Here, in the shadow of the Corpus Christi, the weight of June 10, 1971, still hangs heavy. On that day, students marched in support of university autonomy, a cause ignited in Monterrey but resonating powerfully here in Mexico City. The Corpus Christi became a backdrop to a brutal clash between student demonstrators and a government-backed paramilitary group known as the Halcones, or Falcons. These weren’t hardened soldiers, but young men, many of them university students themselves. They were recruited, trained, and armed by the Federal District government. As thousands of students marched down Avenida San Cosme, the Halcones attacked. Armed with wooden poles, chains, and truncheons, they descended upon the crowd while police passively observed. The violence left at least 25 students dead and dozens wounded, scarring this city and the nation. The Corpus Christi Massacre exposed the dark underbelly of a government grappling with student dissent. In the aftermath, the official narrative pointed to student infighting, a blatant attempt to erase the Halcones and the government’s role. While Mexico City mayor, Alfonso Martínez Domínguez, was forced to resign, questions about President Echeverría’s knowledge and approval of the Halcones’ actions remained. The Corpus Christi stands as a silent witness, a stark reminder of a day when peaceful protest met with brutal repression. It’s a story not just of violence, but of a government’s betrayal of its own people, a tragic chapter in Mexico’s history that continues to demand answers.
