High above us, the Copete del Águila beckons. Its summit is the highest point in Parque Chipinque. It is the highest peak visible from Monterrey. Are you ready to explore its secrets?
The Copete del Águila summit reaches 2220 meters above sea level. This makes it the tallest of Chipinque’s three peaks. The other peaks are Ventana and La EME. Reaching Copete del Águila requires a long hike. But the views from the top are spectacular.
Our adventure begins in San Pedro Garza García. It is a short 15-minute drive from Monterrey’s metropolitan area. The trail leads into the Sierra Madre. The landscape offers amazing contrasts. From here we can admire Cerro de la Silla. It is a symbol of Monterrey. We also get stunning views of Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey.
A typical hike to Copete del Águila starts early at 6:00 am. We will meet at the Meseta del Parque Ecológico Chipinque. The total distance is about 13.1 kilometers. The ascent covers 6.5 kilometers. So does the descent. The elevation gain is 928 meters.
The entire hike takes about 8 to 9 hours. The ascent takes around 4 hours. We will spend about 30 minutes at the summit. The descent takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Keep in mind that these times are averages.
The hike is considered moderately challenging. It is best for active people with some mountain experience. Be prepared for 6 to 7 hours of hiking. The terrain can be demanding.
The route begins at the Meseta. From there, we head toward Mesa de Apazotes. The first 3.4 kilometers are relatively easy. It is a good warm-up. We pass a shrine to the Virgin. Before reaching Puerto del Aire, we turn right. This leads us toward Mesa del Epazote. Shortly before Mesa del Epazote, we find the trail to Copete del Águila on the left.
Entering the trail changes the slope. The next section is 2.2 kilometers with a 600-meter elevation gain. This part is physically demanding. Maintaining a steady pace and breathing well are key. As we climb, we will see Monterrey and Cerro del Topo Chico to the north. To the northeast is Cerro de la Silla. To the northwest is Cerro de las Mitras. Eventually, we will reach Árbol Amigo.
Árbol Amigo is a large pine tree. It marks a fork in the trail. One path leads to Las Antenas and La Ventana. The other path to the left leads to Copete del Águila.
The final section requires more skill. It is recommended to wear a helmet and gloves. There are some short sections of rock climbing. Fortunately, the holds are good. The climbs are not totally vertical. You may find ropes, cables, or steel steps for support. Keep your hands free for safety. Reaching the ridge offers spectacular views. To the south is the Sierra Madre Oriental. To the west are La Ventana, Las Antenas, La EME, and La Huasteca. In the distance, you can see Cerro de la Calle. To the east are Cañón de Ballesteros, the national highway, and Presa de la Boca. A short walk along the ridge eastward brings you to the summit. A cross marks the top.
The return trip follows the same route. Be careful on the climbing sections. Descend facing the wall. A rope or harness can make it easier.
Remember to respect the park. Pack out all trash. Stay on marked trails. Do not disturb the wildlife. Enjoy the stunning views from Copete del Águila.
