Its origins trace back to a series of extraordinary events in 1531. An indigenous man named Juan Diego claimed to have encountered the Virgin Mary herself, not far from where we are standing. She appeared to him four times, requesting that a church be built in her honor on Tepeyac Hill. Initially met with skepticism, Juan Diego was asked for a sign to prove the validity of his visions. He returned with Castilian roses, miraculously blooming in the middle of winter, wrapped in his tilma. Upon unfurling the cloak, a captivating image of the Virgin Mary was imprinted on the fabric. This image, now revered as Our Lady of Guadalupe, became a symbol of hope and unity, especially for the indigenous population of Mexico.
