Didn’t Monterrey need two churches? In the mid-20th century the number of parishioners in downtown Monterrey grew so much that two churches had to be built together. Here at the crossroads of Ruperto Martínez and Juan Méndez stands Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. This is one of Monterrey’s most fascinating architectural curiosities.

Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro has a deep history and cultural significance. It stands alongside the Templo de Nuestra Señora de Dolores. The Templo de Nuestra Señora de Dolores was built first. Construction began in 1909. Archbishop Santiago de la Garza Zambrano initiated it. The church fuses many styles. Its interior dazzles with neobaroque decorations and neogothic altars. The walls are made of caliche stone. They hold stories of devotion and tradition. The cupola is supported by steel structures. It shelters over 4000 square meters of mural paintings. It is truly a work of art in religious architecture.

As Monterrey grew in the 1950s another temple was needed. In 1954 the foundations were laid for Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. Architect Luis F Flores designed it. It features a late Mexican colonial style. Its facade has columns and niches. Two imposing bell towers rise high. Above the main altar a mosaic-covered dome gleams. It protects a monumental sculpture of the Virgin. Light filters through stained glass windows. These windows were made by artists from Iran Spain. The light bathes the space in a heavenly glow.

The Templo de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro marked its 75th anniversary. The first stone was placed on February 19 1950. Monsignor Guillermo Tritschler y Córdova blessed it. He was the seventh Archbishop of Monterrey. Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro addresses the growing number of worshipers. The original Templo de Nuestra Señora de Dolores could no longer accommodate them all.

Both temples stand as unique neighbors. They are close together. Their architecture reflects Monterrey’s history. They show the devotion to the Virgin of Perpetuo Socorro.

Inside Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro admire the stained glass. Note the icon of the Mother of God. It is a symbol of Marian devotion. The architecture is beautiful. The stained glass is plentiful and large. It adds artistic and spiritual value.

Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro and Nuestra Señora de Dolores have witnessed history. In May 1912 relatives of President Francisco I Madero prayed for peace here. Over the years both temples have hosted important city events. They are places of prayer. They are also places to encounter history. They represent the faith of Monterrey. These temples symbolize devotion to the Virgin of Perpetuo Socorro. Today these two temples coexist. They stand amidst the fast-paced life of downtown Monterrey. Inside there is peace and spirituality. Outside the market thrives. Merchants and visitors create a vibrant area. It is a meeting point between history and modernity.
