They called him Diego de Montemayor a name whispered on the wind across the plains of Nuevo Leon. He wasn’t just any conquistador. He was the founder of Monterrey. Stand here on this very spot and feel the echoes of his ambition.

Picture this: September 20 1596. A small band of settlers emerges from the dust. They are weary but determined. Among them is Diego de Montemayor. He had already faced countless hardships. His earlier attempts to establish a settlement here had failed. Previous attempts named Santa Lucia and San Luis Rey de Francia had been abandoned. Alberto del Canto and Luis de Carabajal y Cueva had failed before him. But Montemayor was not one to give up. He brought with him forty souls: nine married couples three single men fourteen boys four girls and even an indigenous man named Domingo Manuel.

He named this new city Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Senora de Monterrey. A grand name for a humble beginning. It was a calculated move to curry favor with the Viceroy Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo the Count of Monterrey. The city’s name itself reflects the political landscape of the time. Montemayor’s tenacity paid off. He had finally secured a foothold in this unforgiving land.

His personal life was as dramatic as his exploits. He is thought to have married three times. His first wife was Ines Rodriguez his second Maria de Esquivel and his third Juana Porcallo de la Cerda. He fathered three children. A tragic incident unfolded involving his third wife. An argument about an affair ensued. Montemayor in a fit of rage killed her. He fled but somehow avoided punishment. His daughter Estefania later married Alberto del Canto his arch-enemy. The feud between these families would have shaped the early days of Monterrey.

Montemayor’s legacy lives on. Not only in the very stones of the city but also in the families who followed in his footsteps. He ruled as governor of Nuevo Leon from 1588 to 1610. He died around 1611. They say he’s buried near where the Convento de San Francisco once stood. Monterrey is a testament to his vision and perseverance. A testament to a man who dared to dream big on this harsh land. His spirit still lingers here in the very air we breathe.
