“This place has seen a lot of history,” whispered a voice beside me. Guadalupe, can you believe it all? It’s hard to imagine that this bustling city, now a major part of the Monterrey metropolitan area, was once a much quieter place. Founded in 1716, Guadalupe was initially a mission. The land on which it stands, however, had been inhabited long before the Spanish arrived. Diego de Montemayor, the founder of Monterrey, was actually given this land back in 1596. He never really used it, and by 1627 it had become a place for plantations growing sugar cane and corn. The story takes a turn when Captain Nicolás Ochoa de Elejalde owned the land. The Spanish government took it from him, establishing the mission that would eventually become Guadalupe. The city went through a name change too. In 1756, it became “Pueblo de la Nueva Tlaxcala de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Horcasitas.” It wasn’t until 1825 that Guadalupe officially became a municipality, and even then, it was called “Villa de Guadalupe” for many years. Today, Guadalupe stands as a testament to its rich past, a blend of indigenous presence, Spanish influence, and modern growth.
