Opened in 1978, Planetario Alfa wasn’t just a building. It was a dream realized. A dream of Don Roberto Garza Sada, who envisioned a space for cultural expression in Monterrey. Planetario Alfa quickly became a beacon of science and technology in Latin America. It housed the first IMAX dome outside the United States, a marvel that drew visitors from far and wide. Imagine being among the first in the Spanish-speaking world to experience the immersive power of IMAX. This dome wasn’t just a screen. It was a portal to other worlds, a window to the universe. The Planetario Alfa also showcased an interactive science museum, a novelty at the time. Visitors could engage with exhibits, sparking their curiosity and igniting a passion for learning. Beyond the dome and the museum, Planetario Alfa offered a unique blend of science and nature. An aviary, home to over 200 birds of 25 different species, brought the wonders of the natural world to life. A science garden provided a space for children to explore physics through play. And for those who yearned to look beyond our own planet, the largest public observatory in Mexico offered breathtaking views of the cosmos. Planetario Alfa was more than just a museum. It was a cultural center, a place where art and science intertwined. The metallic mural “El Espejo” by Manuel Felguerez greeted visitors in the vestibule, while pre-Hispanic monuments dotted the grounds. Even royalty graced its halls. King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited in 2014, meeting with top companies of Nuevo León. Sadly, Planetario Alfa closed its doors in 2020. But its legacy lives on. Over 15.2 million visitors experienced its magic during its 42 years of operation. Its exhibits, once a testament to cutting-edge technology, now reside in the Museo Universitario de Ciencias. While the physical building may be gone, the spark of curiosity it ignited continues to burn bright in the hearts and minds of those who visited.
