Feel the warm Jamaican sand between your toes. Welcome to Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club.
In 1906 Dr Alexander James McCatty gifted his beach property. He established a bathing club in Montego Bay. It was initially a private club. His friends mostly doctors used it. They accessed the beach through a cave. That’s how Doctor’s Cave got its name. A hurricane destroyed the cave in 1932.
The crystal-clear water is a constant 78 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s 22 to 28 degrees Celsius. It’s consistently warm year-round. This amazing beach became even more famous in the 1920s. Sir Herbert Barker a British osteopath visited. He wrote an article praising the water’s curative powers. He claimed it restored his health. Suddenly Doctor’s Cave became incredibly popular. Rich and famous people flocked to try the water. Hotels sprang up nearby. Montego Bay’s tourism industry boomed.
Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club is more than just a beach. It’s a historical landmark. It’s at the heart of Montego Bay’s “Hip Strip”. It’s part of the protected Montego Bay Marine Park. Today you can relax on the soft white sand. You can swim in the turquoise water. Snorkel among the coral reefs. Enjoy the safe and beautiful beach. The club remains a testament to Dr McCatty’s generosity and foresight. It’s a major contributor to Jamaica’s rich tourism heritage. Soak it all in. Enjoy this special place. Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club a true Montego Bay treasure.
