Across the Kilindini Harbour the Likoni Ferry awaits. Its journey a lifeline for Mombasa. For generations this ferry has connected Mombasa Island to the mainland suburb of Likoni. This isn’t just a ferry ride. It’s a passage through time.

Kwa Da Shamsa Likoni is more than a viewpoint. It’s a silent witness to history. The ferry’s rhythmic chug echoes the steady beat of Mombasa’s pulse. Since 1937 the Likoni Ferry has plied these waters. Imagine the countless stories held within its hulls. The lives it has carried across the waves. The hopes and dreams carried by the passengers.

Before the modern ferries arrived smaller boats and canoes made the crossing. This was the only way to reach Likoni. The journey was perilous. Especially during stormy weather. The crossing was even more treacherous at low tide. The shallowest point near Mombasa Island. People could even walk across at that time.

The Likoni Ferry wasn’t always smooth sailing. The older ferries sometimes malfunctioned. They’d drift out to sea. In 1994 tragedy struck. The Mtongwe ferry capsized. 272 people perished. This was a disaster that shook the community. The tragedy spurred improvements in ferry safety.

Today seven ferries serve the route. MV Mvita and MV Pwani arrived in 1969 and 1974. MV Nyayo MV Harambee and MV Kilindini joined the fleet in 1990. MV Kwale and MV Likoni were added in 2010. MV Jambo a recent addition arrived from Turkey in 2020. The Likoni Ferry remains a vital artery. Connecting Mombasa Island and Likoni.

The ferry’s importance extends beyond transportation. It is a vital economic link. It is a symbol of Mombasa’s enduring spirit. The Likoni Ferry is a testament to the human spirit. Its strength and resilience. It’s a story etched on the waves. A story that continues to unfold with each crossing. From Kwa Da Shamsa Likoni you see this story. You feel it. You become part of it.
