The TUM Administration Block stands as a testament to a rich legacy of education and innovation. The Technical University of Mombasa’s story began long before its official university status in 2013. It started in the late 1940s as the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME). This institute, born from a vision shared by Sir Philip Mitchell, Aga Khan III, and Sir Bernard Reilly, aimed to provide technical education to Muslim students in East Africa. In May 1951, MIOME welcomed its first cohort, focusing on crucial fields like Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Seamanship, Navigation, and Woodwork. The transformation of the TUM Administration Block mirrors the evolution of the institution itself. In 1966, MIOME became the Mombasa Technical Institute (MTI), opening its doors to students of all backgrounds. Then, in 1976, MTI became the Mombasa Polytechnic, expanding its programs to meet the growing demands of a changing world. The polytechnic thrived, adding departments in Business Studies, Engineering, and Applied Sciences. The journey continued, and in 2007, Mombasa Polytechnic became the Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC). Finally, in 2013, under President Mwai Kibaki, MPUC received its charter and became the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) that we know today. The TUM Administration Block has witnessed this remarkable journey. It has seen the institution grow from a small technical institute to a bustling university, a hub of learning and innovation.
