What colossal teeth rise above us? These aren’t ancient remains. These are the Mombasa Tusks. They are a symbol of Mombasa, Kenya, a modern monument with a royal history. The Mombasa Tusks weren’t always these gleaming aluminum giants. In 1952, they were humble structures of wood and canvas. They were erected along Kilindini Road, now Moi Avenue, to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s visit. The Queen’s residence was at the Mombasa Yachting Club. The wooden tusks marked her route from the airport. These original tusks were meant to be temporary. However, their popularity with locals and businesses changed their fate. They became a local advertising spot. The tusks became a landmark, a meeting place. In 1956, Kilindini Road expanded. A new set of tusks was commissioned. These were made of weather-resistant aluminum. This was also around the time of Princess Margaret’s visit. The four aluminum tusks, two over each lane, coincidentally formed an “M” for Mombasa. These Mombasa Tusks have stood the test of time. They’ve been repainted multiple times. Even US Marines have helped maintain their bright sheen during their visits. They represent Mombasa’s connection to its colonial past and its embrace of the future. In 2017, the tusks received another update. A model elephant was placed between them, solidifying their symbolism. So, as you stand beneath these towering aluminum arches, remember their journey. From temporary wooden structures to iconic metal emblems. The Mombasa Tusks represent not just a city, but the passage of time and the evolution of a nation.
