Is this palazzo as grand as it looks? You might be surprised to learn that Palazzo Serbelloni started its life much humbler. Before becoming this neoclassical masterpiece we see today, it was a more modest 17th-century building. Then, Duke Gabrio Serbelloni, a man of exquisite taste, envisioned something grander. He acquired the original structure along with neighboring properties, setting the stage for the Palazzo Serbelloni’s magnificent transformation. He entrusted the ambitious project to Simone Cantoni, a rising star in the architectural world who had recently arrived in Milan from Genoa. Cantoni, with his keen eye for neoclassical elegance, designed the striking facade that graces Corso Venezia, one of Milan’s most prestigious streets. Completed in 1795, the Palazzo Serbelloni became more than just a residence. It was a hub of intellectual and social life. Within these very walls, luminaries of the Enlightenment such as Pietro Verri, Giuseppe Parini, and Paolo Frisi engaged in lively discourse, their ideas illuminating the path towards a more enlightened future. Later, the palazzo transformed into a stage for lavish celebrations, where Milanese aristocracy gathered for glittering balls and unforgettable soirees. History continued to unfold within these walls. Palazzo Serbelloni even hosted Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife, Josephine, during their time in Milan. The palace bears witness to their presence, a tangible link to a pivotal era in European history. As you admire the grandeur of Palazzo Serbelloni, remember its multifaceted past, a testament to Milan’s enduring legacy of art, intellect, and grand celebrations.
