Fancy meeting some of Italy’s most notable figures? Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti has seen its share of them. It is a historical building in Lodi. Lodi is a town southeast of Milan. You will find it at the corner of Via XX Settembre and Corso Roma. It is also known as Palazzo Pitoletti Fontana Soletti.

Construction of Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti dates back to the early 18th century. More precisely, it was built between 1720 and 1726. Domenico Sartorio was the initial architect. His sons Michele and Piergiacomo later took over the project. Giovan Battista Modignani commissioned the palace. He became president of the magistracy of Milan in 1727. The Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti was built on the site of an older building. This building was called Malcantone.

Many important people have stayed here. Even Napoleon Bonaparte visited Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti. Carlo Alberto of Savoy also stayed here. Vittorio Emanuele II graced its halls. Even Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph visited.

The Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti presents an austere facade. Its three stories are divided by pilasters. These frame the baroque windows. You may notice some unusual features. For example, the third-floor windows have more decorations. They are more ornate than those on the main floor. Also, it lacks a grand entrance and a balcony above it.

Inside Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti, lies a courtyard. It features rows of double columns. This design reflects a Lombard tradition from the 16th century. Alessandro Mazzucotelli created the wrought iron gate. He was a master of the Art Nouveau style from Lodi.

Inside, the main floor boasts rich frescoes. Sebastiano Galeotti and Giovan Battista Sassi created them. A spiral staircase of elliptical design is remarkable. It leads to an octagonal tower. You can even see it from the street.

The building has a U-shaped layout with plastered masonry walls. It has an irregular design. This is because of two small courtyards on its east and west sides. A garden surrounds the building. It features mature trees and double columns. These columns are typical of the Sartorio brothers’ designs.

The main portal leads into a large atrium. This atrium opens to the colonnade of the courtyard. On the main floor, you will find a series of 18th-century rooms. You can walk through nine frescoed rooms. They lead to a ballroom.

Now, imagine a grand ball in the Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti. The sounds of music fill the air. Dancers twirl beneath the frescoes. Servants offer refreshments. Important figures discuss politics and art.

The Palazzo Modignani-Pitoletti stands as a symbol of Lodi. It shows the city’s rich history. The palace has witnessed centuries of change. It has hosted emperors and revolutionaries. It is a place where art and history intertwine.
