Frederick’s ambition was immense. He aimed to restore the Empire’s power. He wanted to control not just Germany but also northern Italy. His first Italian campaign began in 1154. He faced resistance immediately. After capturing Milan he besieged Tortona. He razed it to the ground in 1155.
He then went to Pavia. There he was crowned King of Italy. He later received the imperial crown from Pope Adrian IV in Rome. This coronation wasn’t without incident. Rome was in turmoil. Frederick had to suppress a revolt. He then continued to push for control of Italy.

This greatly angered Frederick.
The Battle of Legnano in 1176 was a turning point. The Lombard League decisively defeated Barbarossa’s forces. This defeat humbled the emperor. He had to negotiate for peace. The Peace of Venice in 1177 marked a significant shift. Frederick recognized Pope Alexander III. He also conceded the right of the Lombard cities to elect their own magistrates.
