Gazing upon the unassuming facade of the Cappella dei Morti, one might not suspect the treasures within. This chapel, tucked away near Milan’s bustling Piazza Duomo, holds a story as chilling as it is captivating. The Cappella dei Morti, also known as San Bernardino alle Ossa, isn’t your typical Milanese landmark. It’s a place where art and mortality intertwine in a truly unforgettable way. The story begins long before the chapel itself, back in the 12th century. A hospital and cemetery, built in 1145, once stood on this very ground. The cemetery, overflowing with the deceased, necessitated a unique solution. In 1210, a small chamber, an ossuary, was constructed to house the remains. This ossuary marked the beginning of what would become the Cappella dei Morti. The church of San Bernardino da Siena was later built alongside the ossuary, further consecrating this space. Tragedy struck in 1712 when a fire ravaged the church. Architect Carlo Giuseppe Merlo led the reconstruction, creating the larger structure we see today. The chapel within, however, retained its macabre centerpiece: the ossuary. Its walls are adorned with human skulls and bones, arranged not haphazardly, but with a chilling artistry. Skulls line the niches and ledges, bones frame the pillars and doors, creating an intricate, albeit unsettling, tapestry of mortality. Above the altar, a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows offers a poignant counterpoint to the skeletal décor. The frescoes by Sebastiano Ricci, depicting angels and the four patron saints, further enhance the juxtaposition of life and death, heaven and the earthly remains. Legend whispers that on All Souls’ Day, the bones of a young girl, interred within the altar, reanimate, leading the other skeletons in a ghostly dance. This tale adds another layer of mystique to this already fascinating chapel. The Cappella dei Morti stands as a testament to Milan’s rich and layered history, a place where beauty and the macabre coexist, inviting contemplation on the ephemeral nature of life.
