Who were the unsung heroes of Isola? Right here in Piazzale Segrino stands the Monumento ai caduti dell’Isola. This sculpture is more than just steel and concrete. It’s a tribute to the local patriots who fought against fascism from 1943 to 1945. The Monumento ai caduti dell’Isola was created in 1972 by Milanese artist Carlo Ramous. It originally stood on Via Filippo Sassetti. But in 2009, it was moved here at the request of Isola residents. The monument has two main parts. A dynamic steel sculpture reaches skyward. Its base is a concrete block. Etched into the concrete are the names of the partisans who gave their lives for freedom. An inscription above the names dedicates the monument to these fallen heroes. It reads, “To the patriots of the old neighborhood of Isola fallen in the liberation fight against fascism 1943-1945.” Ramous himself described the sculpture as representing “the violence, the memory, the freedom of flags to affirm faith in human dignity which cannot be stifled.” He oversaw the construction of the Monumento ai caduti dell’Isola at the Arte Mare construction site in Fiumaretta, Liguria. Among the names etched into the concrete are those of Bruno and Gino Meneghini. These two student brothers fought side-by-side against the fascists. They were eventually discovered and executed. Legend says they faced their executioners with unwavering courage, staring them in the eyes until the very end. The Monumento ai caduti dell’Isola stands as a powerful reminder of their bravery, and the sacrifice of all those who fought for freedom. Take a moment to reflect on the lives these names represent. Their courage resonates within the heart of Isola, a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance.
